ACCIONA RECEIVES TWO AWARDS AT THE GLOBAL WATER INTELLIGENCE AWARDS
The Tseung Kwan O Plant (Hong Kong) was named “Desalination Plant of the Year” and the Madinah, Tabuk and Buraydah plants in Saudi Arabia were named “Sewage Treatment Project of the Year”
PARIS, MAY 19th 2025. ACCIONA won two prestigious Global Water Awards this year, organized by Global Water Intelligence magazine and held in Paris. The company won in two categories: “Desalination Plant of the Year” for the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant (Hong Kong) and “Sewage Treatment Project of the Year” for the Madinah-3, Buraydah-2 and Tabuk-2 independent sewage treatment plants (ISTPs) in Saudi Arabia.
Built by ACCIONA in consortium with Jardine Engineering Corporation Limited and China State Construction Engineering Limited, the Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant came into service in 2024. It has a treatment capacity of 137,000 m3/day and serves 850,000 people. Thanks to its reverse osmosis technology, the plant offers Hong Kong a solution to the climate change and low rainfall challenges, meeting approximately 5% of the city’s total freshwater demand.
The Madinah, Tabuk and Buraydah independent sewage treatment plants, built by ACCIONA in Saudi Arabia, stand out for their innovation in optimizing their physical and environmental footprint. These three plants provide sewage treatment for two million people and support national water conservation and reuse initiatives in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a project aimed at achieving sustainable development and economic diversification.
The Global Water Intelligence Awards recognize the main achievements of the international water sector in different categories annually at the World Water Summit. These awards highlight initiatives and companies that contribute to the sector’s progress through improved operational performance, sustainable financial models, and the adoption of innovative technologies.
